MAMIL’s MUNGA for TEARS
The plan for 2024 is to make it the biggest riding year yet.
I have entered the MUNGA grit and the MUNGA and, inspired by others who have used these enormous physical challenges to raise funds for good causes, I would like to use my efforts as an opportunity to assist T.E.A.R.S. TEARS provides rescue, medical and rehoming services for distressed animals on the peninsula and specifically in low-income areas of greater Cape Town. I feel it is a worthy cause and if I’m going to suffer on the bike I would like it to have some meaning beyond the physical and emotional benefits ultra distance cycling has given me.
If you would like to contribute, please follow this link to the GivenGain campaign. or scan the QR code. Not one cent of funds raised will pass through the MAMIL’s paws – it all goes to TEARS.
What are these events?
The Munga Grit is a 500 kilometer loop through the Tankwa Karoo starting and finishing just outside Ceres. There is a 50 hour cutoff time for those 500km. Wind, heat, corrugations make will make this a seriously challenging ride. The start is on Friday 24 April 2024
The full Munga is a 1100 kilometer mountain bike race starting in Bloemfontein and finishing in Wellington in the Western Cape. The route is on farm and dirt roads and the 120 hour time limit begins on 27 November 2024. Mid summer heat, the extraordinarily tough conditions.
I don’t know if I can do it. A significant proportion of the riders who line up on the start lines of these two events withdraw for one or other reason. I know of several, all better and stronger riders than I am, who have mounted unsuccesful attempts. I also know several (also better on a bike than I am) who have completed it.
All say that the events are beyond anything else they have experienced on a bike.
Whatever the outcome, your funds will go to TEARS and whatever tears I shed in the desert in the middle of our country will not be in vain.
